The Connection Between Stress and Your Nervous System

Your body is wired for survival. When you encounter a threat, your stress response system activates—often called the fight-or-flight response. This is part of the connection between stress and the nervous system.

In short bursts, this response is incredibly helpful. Your heart rate increases, your muscles tense, and your focus sharpens so you can respond quickly to danger.

But when stress becomes constant—whether from work pressure, caregiving, financial strain, or emotional overwhelm—your nervous system doesn’t get the signal that it’s safe to relax.

Instead of cycling back to a calm, regulated state, your body can get “stuck” in survival mode.

Over time, this can look like:

  • Living in a constant state of alertness or anxiety
  • Feeling emotionally numb or shut down
  • Swinging between overwhelm and exhaustion

These patterns are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are signs that your nervous system has been working overtime for too long.

Physical Symptoms of Chronic Stress

Chronic stress doesn’t just live in your thoughts—it shows up in your body, too.

Some common physical symptoms include:

  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Muscle tension, especially in the neck, shoulders, or jaw
  • Digestive issues (like stomach pain, bloating, or nausea)
  • Trouble sleeping or feeling unrested even after sleep
  • Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • A racing heart or feeling “on edge”
  • Getting sick more often

You might also notice everyday experiences like:

  • Snapping at loved ones more easily
  • Feeling overwhelmed by small tasks
  • Struggling to concentrate or remember things
  • Reaching for coping habits (like scrolling, overeating, or withdrawing) just to get through the day

These are not random symptoms. They are your body’s way of adapting to ongoing stress—doing its best to protect you with the resources it has.

How Therapy Helps

Healing is so important and something I always say is that unprocessed emotion WILL tweak our behavior and how we respond and react to things.

I often hear things like “I don’t feel like myself” and of course you don’t! How cool is that your body is sending you a signal and message that you are misaligned and need to tend to something.

I wish there was an easy fix to healing, but the truth is that we need to process through her emotions and experiences. When feeling stressed and overwhelmed…we need to work with that “part” and gain a better and deeper understanding of what’s going on and if it is stuck in the past from unresolved and unhealed experiences.

The benefit of working through this in a therapeutic space is that you don’t have to do it alone. Our nervous system responds well to breaking isolation and working in connection with another human being.

Rather than judging your reactions, therapy helps you understand them. And with understanding (and more importantly processing and tending to the parts of you that are stuck) comes the possibility for change.

Call to Action

If you feel stuck in cycles of chronic stress, burnout, or constant overwhelm, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Support is available—and healing is possible.

Reaching out for therapy can be a powerful step toward feeling more regulated, more present, and more like yourself again. If you’re ready, consider exploring therapy support and giving your nervous system the care it deserves.
